What Does Insurance Cover

If you own a pet, you might want to take a few minutes to learn if your auto and home policies cover pets.  If your pet is hurt in an auto accident, are any of the vet bills covered?  Does the liability coverage for your homeowners policy cover situations where your pet injures someone else or damages their property?

Progressive Insurance, for example, covers dogs or cats for $500 in vet bills/medicine if the pet is injured in an auto accident.  Relative to homeowners, Progressive says that 15% of liability claims paid were due to dog bite claims(2005).  Because of that, insurance companies do not dover all breeds such as: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Wolf hybrids.  Also, exotics such as snakes, tigers and others may be unsurable.

Net, net. Check your insurance policy to see if your pet is covered.

Health Insurance - What you should know...

Questions you should consider when deciding to buy pet health insurance:

  1. What kind of health conditions are prevalent in your breed? Are these excluded from insurance coverage?
  2. What is the cost to address health conditions?
  3. Does your pet have potentially costly habits such as chewing things?
  4. Is your pet sick now…will it be excluded from coverage?
  5. At what stage in the pet’s life span does it make sense to get insurance…puppy, active, older?  Is there an age cut-off?
  6. How important is this pet to you…how much are you willing to spend and can afford?
  7. What are the insurance’s deductibles, co-pays, exclusions and caps?
  8. Is there a discount for multiple pets?
  9. Can you chose your own veterinarian?
